When I first made the decision to untap my sparkle, I put a ton of pressure on myself to make huge, sweeping changes. I thought one major change or decision would quickly lead to my new perfect life. I was all about those quick (ahem, unsustainable) fixes when I first sought sparkle. What I have discovered along the way is that true sparkle can be found in the simplest of moments.
This is not to say that making large shifts wouldn’t inspire your sparkle. Large lifestyle changes can sometimes be the overhaul we need. But, in the interest of sustainable sparkle, I urge you recognize the power of simple moments that make you sparkle. Those simple moments can add up to create those large sweeping shifts. The simple moments of sparkle build the most beautiful foundation.
When I consider the changes in my life over the past decade, I could tell you about the HUGE shifts: changing careers, losing over 60 pounds, removing psychiatric medications from my life, healing a lifetime of gut distress. Those feel BIG. And in truth, they are. If you would have told me a decade ago that I would be medication free and comfortable in my body, I would have laughed in your face. It felt too hard, too much, too impossible. In reality, the simple moments are exactly how I made those sweeping changes. By making small moments of sparkle a priority, I was able to add all those moments up into those larger shifts.
What are simple moments of sparkle? The first one that comes to mind is enjoying a delicious, soothing, hot cup of tea. Prioritize your wants, needs, and desires by sitting with a cup of your favorite brew; simply enjoy it with every sense. Breathing deeply and feeling gratitude for the moment we are in is a surefire ways to stimulate sparkle.
When I look back on those big shifts, I get glimpses of simple moments of sparkle. Taking time for myself by reading books about empowering and advocating for my own wellness makes me sparkle. Taking a day to rest when my body, mind, and spirit truly needs it makes me sparkle. Trying new foods and cooking techniques (I am not a natural in this department) makes me sparkle. Being kind to and laughing at myself in the process when these kitchen experiments don’t go as planned? Also stimulates sparkle. Giving myself the freedom to explore what feels good to me (rather than forcing habits and practices that sound good on paper but don’t actually translate to joy for me) makes me sparkle. Trial and error? Totally leads to sparkle.
Our days are already filled with sparkle. The practice in this process is to pause and recognize those simple sparkle moments. Awareness and gratitude for simple sparkle is how the big shifts happen. This weekend, I challenge you to pause and recognize the moments that are creating your sustainable sparkle.
