A piece of untapping my sparkle is recognizing and expressing gratitude for the loves in my life. While romance, crushes, and intimate relationships are worthy of gratitude and may be an important part of your sparkle, this is not the type of love of that I am reflecting on here. We all have loves that go beyond these traditional definitions. These loves of our life are the beautiful aspects of our existence that uniquely provide us with joy, sparkle, and act as catalysts in our journey to come home to ourselves.
I have previously shared some of the ways that I practice coming home to myself. Beyond just actively engaging in the practice, there is an important second step.
Recognizing the role these sparkle-inducing activities play in our lives is a key piece of truly appreciating the unique facets of all the interests, passions, and actions that make up our beautiful being. When I consider the beautiful humans around me, I see so many passions included in the sparkle. My nearest and dearest loved ones’ lives include passions like acting, soccer, crossfit, baking, piano playing, improv, dog training, reading, rock climbing, building Lego, and running marathons. The recipe for sparkle is unique to each individual.
One of the true loves of my life is a creative expression; I am madly in love with music. This is not a short-lived affair, but rather a lifelong obsession. Music has always been my dearest companion. Celebrating my successes, invigorating my sparkle, expressing my sadness when I have no words, and shifting my moods in exactly the way I need most...Music knows me better than I often feel like I know myself.
About a year ago, I met with an amazing clairvoyant reader. Within the first few minutes of our session, she told me that one of the biggest aspects of my energy that was coming through to her was my passion for music. I wasn’t wearing a band t-shirt or anything that would tip her off to this; I truly believe that my love for music is just so imprinted on my cells that it was radiating her way. While I had never considered how much I adore music to be one of my most forthcoming qualities, her recognition of it made me realize how much this love has shaped who I am.
Music makes me sparkle more than anything.
Music is a passion for many people, particularly musicians and singers. I do not identify as either of those, but rather, simply a music super fan. My favorite activity in life is watching musicians I love perform for a full, energized, passionate crowd. Live music experiences feel more like emotional and restorative spiritual events for me. There is no pressure for me to perform, make conversation, or be “on”. I can just be me. There is only soaking in the loving energy of this creative expression that feels like it is speaking directly to me and through me.
At a very young age I found myself interested (okay… obsessed) with so many bands and artists that make up the musical history of America. At 9, 10, 11, 12 years old, I was reading biographies about the cultural icons of the 60s and 70s. I have always felt a direct connection to this time, these revolutionaries, this sound. So much so, that in 5th grade I carried my favorite cassette tape in my back pocket, just to always be close to the thing that filled my soul most. I have always had an innate hunger inside me to understand the lives of my heroes. Even in my youth, I wanted to know my icons’ struggles, triumphs, creative processes, and learn as many life details as possible to feed my passion. It was not necessarily considered the coolest thing for a young middle-schooler to be into at the time, but my nerdiness was laying the foundation for my passion to bloom. This early obsession provided a comfortable home for me to turn to in my youth and throughout my entire life. I consider myself so lucky to have discovered the sweet medicine of music so early in my development.
For me, the music, culture, and community of the bands I love are a huge part of the sacred medicine that feeds my sparkle. Whether I attend a musical event with dear friends or solo, I feel replenished. The friends that I share these spiritual experiences with are individuals that I have loved for many lifetimes (whether I have known them since I was young, or they came into my life in recent years), which just adds to the gratitude, power, and healing that comes with these events. The experience of attending a live show is magic, but even watching my favorite band from my couch on a livestream (#couchtour) restores my sparkle and fills my wellness cup. This simple act brings me home to myself every damn time.
What are you grateful for in your life that doesn't fall into the traditional categories? Yes, of course you are grateful for your spouse or partner, children, parents, family, pets, and friends. It is incredibly important to consider not just the relationships that make up your sparkle, but your passions. How can you fill your wellness cup for yourself? By acknowledging the loves of your life that are outside of the traditional definitions, we begin to see the many facets of who we are as beautiful, messy, sparkly humans. Our facets of passion are where we truly sparkle.
