One’s sparkle is a beautiful combination of the authentic self, habits, creativity, dreams, relationships, and more. Sparkle is not easily defined, and yet, when we witness sparkle, we know it is sparkle. An individual’s energy is a part of their sparkle, too. For some, talking about energy gets too woo-woo or too spiritual, but if we simplify what energy can mean or feel like, I think most of us can connect to the idea of it.
To illustrate energy, I always go back to how you feel in the presence of someone you have a crush on: you feel the person connected to you, almost as though you are touching, even when there is space between you. This is energy. Energy is the feeling you get when you walk into a room where an uncomfortable discussion just took place, and you can feel the tension between the individuals involved or even just in the room. Energy is when you have a seemingly innocent conversation with someone, yet when you walk away, you feel drained, heavy, or like you suddenly have a rain cloud following over your head. Consider when you meet someone new; a first impression could be considered your energetic review of this individual. Sometimes, we are immediately engaged and drawn in. Other times, we may notice that something about this person rubs you the wrong way; you might get a gut feeling to keep your distance.
In my own experience, I have learned that the more I check in on my energetic reaction to a place, person, or situation, the message my energy is trying to give becomes louder and clearer. By trusting my gut I empower it to guide me. In an ideal world, we are only surrounded by energy that resonates with us and leaves us feeling light and flowing. Unfortunately, that is not the current state of the world. Energy is constantly moving all around us, and sometimes, energy gets stuck and stagnant. Stagnant energy is one form of heavy feeling vibes. Other times, without realizing, we allow others to dump their negativity on us.
People talk about energetic encounters in so many different ways. Someone might say that an individual just “has good energy”, is “high vibration”, or has “positive vibes”. Others may say that someone is an “energetic vampire” soaking up all of another’s person’s energy, leaving them feeling drained and depleted. This can likely occur without the “vampire” even realizing they are doing it! Other energetic encounters can feel like someone dumped a bucket of muck all over you. I recently heard this referred to as an energetic octopus. Imagine all eight arms of the octopus covering you and the space around you with their mood, their ideas, their anxieties, and their energy. Sounds pretty overwhelming, right?
Energy is an important part of our physical experience. Again, the more you pay attention to your energy, the stronger your awareness can become (of your own and others). One of the most important steps in understanding the subtle aspects of our bodies is to learn how to protect your energy. In this busy, chaotic, and at times overwhelming world we live in, the more we can protect and clear our own energetic bodies, the more positive energy we will radiate to the space and people around us.
Protecting your energy is all about boundaries and visualization. Often, my daily meditation includes energy protection and clearing, but it is also possible to do this while walking down the street, sitting in your cubicle at work, taking a moment to collect yourself in a restroom, or even amidst a chaotic environment like a city bus or the DMV. In reality, you can protect your energy; protect your sparkle, anywhere.
I have a few favorite tried and true sparkle protection visualizations. Try them all and see what works best for you!
Inner Flame Protection
Imagine a small flame or ember in your heart center. Take a deep breath. As you slowly breathe in, imagine the smoldering light of the flame (like an ember turning orange/red), as you slowly breathe out, imagine the fire growing larger around your heart, into a protective flame of light. Continue this process, slowly breathing in, imaging the smoldering ember lighting up, then slowly breathing out with a growing flame of protection. Each time you breath out, visualize the fire growing larger. It can grow to protect your heart, your body, a larger space around you, the room you are in, your home, and even farther! I like to use this for general energy protection, as well as if I am experiencing pain. I personally find this specific energy protection visualization to be helpful with pain reduction.
Pink Bubble of Light Protection
This visualization is simple and beautiful. You know when Glinda the Good Witch descends upon Dorothy in Oz? She is traveling in her pink bubble of protection! Glinda knows what is up when it comes to energy protections. Just put yourself in your own beautiful, sparkly bubble in your mind, and move through your day with grace. Be like Glinda.
Clear Tube Protection
This protective visualization is also nice and simple. Imagine you are in a clear, glass tube, completely surrounding your body (See Augustus Gloop style below, but you know, without drowning in chocolate. Unless you are into that. You do you.). Any energies that come your way slide right past the sleek clear glass protecting you, moving on their energetic way.
This practice is new to my repertoire, thanks to my enhancing intuition class, and I have to say it has been a real game changer for me. Imagine your arms straight up in the air, pointing your fingers to the sky. Once you have the height set, imagine your arms moving down diagonally, creating a pyramid shape around you. For an added bonus, feel free to visualize this protective pyramid as a color that you love or makes you feel powerful. With this practice, you create a large space of protection around you while also providing a ramp for any undesirable energy coming your way to just slide up and over you without jostling you or your energy. If you feel extra motivated to create a larger protection, you can create another pyramid mirrored below you, so you are surrounded on all sides. I find this practice helpful in travel and movement: walking down an unfamiliar street, on a busy freeway, or in a large crowd.
Sometimes, no matter how hard we try, we get slimed with someone else’s energy.
This happens to even to those most practiced in energy protection. I like to think about it as a learning opportunity when it happens to me, which helps me reframe a sometimes uncomfortable experience. If I get slimed with another person’s energy or if I find myself drained from an energetic vampire, there are a few practices and tools I use to restore my sparkling energy.
- Burn sage, Palo Santo, or incense in your space to reset
- Use a crystal water or essential oil spray in your space
- Meditate with an energy clearing visualization or holding a crystal of your choosing (I love simple clear or smoky quartz for this practice)
- Take an Epsom salt bath
- Shake it off! Literally shake out and physically brush off your whole body
Remember, energy is (ideally) in constant motion. The beauty of this is that if you are feeling less than sparkly, you can take steps to support moving this energy on it’s journey away from you!
